All The DisOrdinary Architecture Project work grows out of collaborations with others, many from architecture and built environment education. We are continually looking for new and innovative ways to building partnerships with architectural and built environment university departments, courses and individuals to develop activities that aim to do disability differently.

  • Co-developing activities within existing projects or modules, across every level of university education, that start from the possibilities of creative difference;
  • Offering open events and workshops that provide positive opportunities for debate and interaction;
  • Co-designing research activities and bids in support of rethinking disability, difference, inclusion and spatial justice;
  • Developing support and opportunities for disabled students and staff to bring their own lived experiences to bear creatively on both own personal development and as a challenge to normative and excluding social and spatial practices;
  • Providing principles and resources that offer a ‘toolkit’ for different training, coaching and development contexts;
  • Creating an expanding collection of  examples of work that suggest creative and innovative directions

Example projects:

Critical Practice module: ( Samir Pandya, University of Westminster and Year 5 architecture students with Jos Boys and disabled artists Joseph Young, Mandy Redvers-Rowe, Zoe Partington and Noemi Lakmaier). Investigating first, how we think – and re-think – the concept of the ‘professional body’, and second, the complex relationships between diverse bodies and the design of built space. Created through:

  • introductory lecture/interactive workshop with Jos aiming to challenge assumptions of professional ‘neutrality’ by co-exploring creative practice as embodied and relational;
  • artist-led one day workshops, first about taking notice of embodiment in diverse ways, and then imagining how design can support our many different ways of being in the world, beyond the limits of Part M building regulations.

Expanding Narratives: (Disabled artist Rachel Gadsden with Judit Pusztaszeri, University of Brighton and first year Interior Architecture students).  Developing ways of expressing what it is to be human, by investigating creative techniques such as photo essays and animated films, to creatively describe the multitude of ways we negotiate space .Undertaken through:

  • intensive design week with Rachel, offering interconnected readings, workshops, activities and tutorials.

The Disruption: (Deaf artist Aaron Williamson with Manijeh Verghese, Inigo Minns and students from Diploma Unit 12, Architectural Association London). Creatively and critically investigating how space contains power, through implicit and explicit scripts that influence our behaviours and actions. Starting with drawn disruptions to reveal how a space is used and the behaviours within it, and then intervening through changing something about that context, through designing an event. Based on:

  • introductory lecture by Aaron, describing his own creative practice and his interest in disrupting everyday ‘normal” behaviours and contexts through absurdity and other means;
  • Artists giving guest tutorials and then reviewing students’ own developing ‘disruptions’.
